Has Autism or ADHD touched
your life? Do you have an Autism or ADHD story to tell, but don't have
the time or energy to publish your own site? You may submit your
articles to yellowrs@verizon.netfor review and I'll post
them. Please include an "about the author..." paragraph.
In June 1988, my son was
diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, or PDD. He was just
over 2 years (28 months) old. We were a military family, stationed in
Augsburg, Germany. Until that point, my career was center stage. I was
24, my wife was 23, our second child was 5 months old. At the
time, we knew nothing about PDD or Autism, and we could have
never imagined how our lives would change because
of it.
You
won't find alot of medical or scientific facts about Autism here. The
internet is busting at the seems with Autism support
sites, they all have an angle to pitch. After
raising an Autistic son for 19 years, we can say that we are
not experts in the field; we can't talk all the technical
scientific jargon that overloads the senses when read. But, we can tell
you about our story, about our family's
struggle with Autism. Some of it is funny, some is sad. Some
is too personal to publish, all of it is real.
What
is Autism? According
to Advocatehealth.com, PDD occurs in the early years of a child's life.
Children with PDD have difficulty in areas of development or use of
functional skills such as language, communication, social skills, and
motor behaviors. Basically,
it's a generic term to classify children
whose development is too prematue to adequately diagnose, such as
Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Rett's Syndrome, etc. Autism is a neurological disorder that
causes difficulties in verbal and
non-verbal communication, social interactions, and higher functions the
brain.
