John in the water, less than a year old

My Son Was Not Born Autistic

Recently I was going through some old pictures of my autistic son, John. Back in those days we took allot of pictures, although it was a few years before we got most of them developed. We moved around allot in those days as well, as most military familys do. it's been nearly 20 years since we've taken a hard look at his pictures from his first 3 years.John - playing with a book.

I almost thought I was looking at pictures of John's youngest sister, who is just 2 1/2 years old. While there is a remarkable resemblance, John also behaved like a normal child. From the pictures, you can see that John was a happy young child that liked books, toys, computers, and just plain laughing and playing. You can see that John smiles and focuses.

While I don't have a picture of it, John used to answer the phone when we lived in Germany. I did shift work back then in the Army, and I would come home and find the phone on the floor (off the hook). Within months John would slip off into that "autistic" shell, and has been there ever since. John is now 23 years old.

I have his medical records where he received the MMR at a routine checkup. It is documented that he said 10+ words, and did all the things 2 year old children should do. Within a few months, we were meeting with a team of specialists that determined he had Pervasive Developmental Disorder. To us simple folk, that meant he was behind in his development, which doctors would later categorize as autistic.

It would take another 10 years before the idea of mercury poisoning would make it into the public's thought process.

John smiling and focusingWe could debate the autism-mercury connection from now to the end of the century. The fact is, no U.S. Government agency is going to admit, on the record, of any proof of a connection. The government is going to refute any reputable autism-mercury study, no matter the source. And any autism-mercury study backed by the U.S. Government is suspect. Why? These are the same agencies that threaten doctors and dentists with pulling their medical license for treating, or suggesting to treat mercury poisoning.

Something happened to my son between 24 and 30 months of age that caused him to regress into "autism". We didn't have the knowledge of the possible environmental factors that may cause autistic symptoms. No one knew what Gluten and Casein was. No one knew about the risks of fish or mercury laden dental fillings.
