The Fold, A Candid Hypnotic Review

By John Crawford

Spoiler Alert --- Spoiler Alert

(Content alert. The Fold is heavily R rated. There is partial nudity, and extreme adult and sexual language, and very heavy adult sexual scenes not appropriate for minors. It's raunchy, but not pornographic. This review is PG.)

A few weeks ago I was presented with a screener for a new sci-fi web series called "The Fold". The filming is professional, motion picture quality. The acting is hit and miss, though, but they did all this on a minuscule budget of about $8,000, and used amateur and semi-professional actors from the New York City area. All in all, it's good. The hot tub scenes are very erotic, but the sound affects are a bit over the top. If raunchy is what you're after, this certainly qualifies. For Example, there are two separate male ejaculation scenes that are so far over the top and so stupidly fake, it's something out of "Naked Gun". The intention was to spoof  the 1970's era Swedish erotica with ooooo's and aaaaa's that squelch out the fine details. Oh, did I mention  plenty of psychedelic flashes and colors.

The Fold is a funny, yet sadistic science fiction web series centered around time travel. It's not your run of the mill, classic science fiction story about time travel. This is time travel invented by amateurs, it's laced with paradoxes. All those things we've learned about in science class, and by watching many other time travel shows goes out the window here.

The real crux of The Fold is that our characters are using the device for sexual gain, and to take retribution on others. Hence the paradoxes.

Premise: An elder scientist (Avery Ferguson) and his son (Cody) invent a device to to travel through time. But the father has a more serious intent of going back in time to key events such as the signing of the U.S. Constitution with intent to influence the founding fathers about the extremes of freedom of speech. Hence preventing such, quote,  perversions from happening, such as "Girls Gone Wild". He says he's not going to let time travel go the same route as the Internet. Let's just say he hasn't seen any action between the sheet, that is, with a woman in a very long time. Unfortunately for him all the other people interested in this have more "primal" plans, especially Cody, who is the actual inventor.

There's Stephanie (played by Ampora McLean) who is fired for something she hasn't even done yet. There's Jef's wife, Cyndi (played by Karen Grenke), who gets it on with Stephanie, Jef, and a few other women in a hot tub, 75 years in the future (2082). Somehow a video of that hot tub scene is found on the Internet in 2007, which causes Stephanie to get fired by Avery Ferguson. Did I mention Jef? He's married to Cyndi, and he in the hot tub business.

What is THE FOLD?

There's something sinister and supernatural about Jef's sexual "abilities". I think it's the hot tub? There's a hint of a dark power drawing attention to the hot tub. When people are in or around it, they become sexual deviants.. For example, two different females, who were spying on the same hot tub action with Jef and several women, began to masturbate uncontrollably. Even to the point their hands cramp up, their bodies keep going.

Whatever "The Fold" is, it's not readily apparent. I think the mystery is what will draw viewers in. (Think LOST).
